Masai Mara Horse riding Safari

Horse back riding in Mara's wilderness

Tour Itinerary

Day 01   Nairobi – Masai Mara National Reserve

You will either be collected from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport or if you have arrived earlier, from your Nairobi hotel and transferred to Wilson Airport for your flight to Mara North in the Masai Mara. Your guide will meet you and drive you to your first camp, set up on the banks of the Mara River adjacent to a teeming hippo pool.

Lunch will be served and you will have a little time to relax before meeting your horses and setting off on an evening ride. We will ride and game drive from this camp and you should see herds of zebra, topi, giraffe, wildebeest, gazelle and there is a good chance of seeing elephant and buffalo as well as lion.  Overnight Mara River.

Day 02    Masai Mara National Reserve

We leave camp with a picnic lunch in our saddle bags, heading south towards the park boundary where we meet the river again at one of the famous wildebeest crossings.  We hopefully ford the river (unless in complete flood) and then head south west across the Mara Triangle where we have our picnic lunch before ascending the Soit Olololol Escarpment.  We reach our camp in a forest glade overlooking the whole Mara ecosystem. Overnight Soit Olololol.

Day 03       Masai Mara National Reserve

We ride south west along the top of the escarpment, enjoying glorious views to the east on excellent going for the horses. We hopefully see the beautiful Mrs Ross’ and Schalows Turaco as well as much plains game. We descend the escarpment on foot, along a rocky cattle track and have a picnic lunch under some acacias at the foot of the escarpment.

After lunch we ride back through the Mara Triangle at the foot of the escarpment, before ascending on a game trail. Many bachelor buffalo herds are a feature of the afternoon. Overnight Soit Olololol.

Day 04    Masai Mara National Reserve

We descend the escarpment again and ride across to the same wildebeest crossing on the river. We head in a westerly direction and descend into the enchanting Olare Orok Valley and picnic by the stream. Reaching our camp in time for tea there should be time to do an evening game drive.  Overnight in camp Olare Orok.

Day 05     Masai Mara National Reserve

A full day of exploring this glorious area on foot, horseback and Land Rover, with the opportunity to go by vehicle right into the Mara Game Reserve with a picnic lunch.  You should get excellent photo opportunities, getting close to buffalo, elephant, lion and maybe cheetah or leopard.  Overnight Olare Orok.

Day 06     Masai Mara National Reserve

Today and we break camp in good time as it is the longest ride of the trip covering nearly 50kms. With a picnic breakfast and lunch along the way, we head to our last camp at Olare Lamun (the rhino salt lick), in a grove of acacia trees by a small stream at the southern edge of the Loita Plains. Overnight Olare Lamun.

Day 07     Masai Mara National Reserve

A full day to explore this remote area with abundant game. Drives, rides and walks may be taken from camp. Overnight Olare Lamun.
