Day 02          Arusha – Marangu

Take a day trip to Marangu in the foothills of Mt Kilimanjaro; home of the Chagga tribe. With a packed lunch and local guides, explore the Kinukamori Falls that are fed by the snows of Kilimanjaro.

Afternoon visit to the traditional Chagga blacksmith workshop.

Days 03/04     Tarangire National Park

Head into Tarangire National Park.

Time to explore the diverse habitats in the park and its incredible wildlife.

Days 05/06      Tarangire – Esilalei

Transfer to Esilalei on the shores of Lake Manyara.

Explore the nursery school, the nearby bomas and generally interact with the residents during their daily lives. Walk through the wilds around the camp to be shown the plants that the Maasai use for traditional medicines. Visit the village and take part in a traditional sing and dance (jumping!) display – the shrill voices of the warriors are embedded in the memory.

Days 07/08        Lake Manyara – Lake Eyasi

Short drive to Lake Manyara. Game drive with opportunities to view its unusual tree-climbing lions and large elephant population, rich bird life in the forests and thousands of flamingos on the soda lake. Walk through the treetops on the rope walkway.

Transfer west into the prehistoric landscape of the Hadza tribe at Lake Eyasi. Traditional hunting and gathering ensures that we are witnessing ancient customs and traditions first hand. With this interaction, we experience the Hadza subsistent and nomadic lifestyle. Continue onto a Datoga traditional blacksmith and maize grounding display.

Day 08                Departure

After breakfast, you will have a morning game drive in Lake Manyara National Park whose inhabitants include hippos, monkeys, tree climbing lions, flamingos and other varieties of birdlife. Lunch at yourLodge.

After lunch, drive back to Arusha and proceed to JRO for departure flight in the evening.

End of services.

Day 09             Ngorongoro Crater

Transfer to Ngorongoro Crater and descend into the crater for spectacular scenery and game viewing in what has been described as the eighth wonder of the world. Return to crater highlands for afternoon bow and arrow practice.

Day 10          Ngorongoro – Arusha

Enjoy a bird and butterfly guided walk then a short drive to nearby centre of Karatu and a leisurely walking safari through farms and villages on the rift valley escarpment.

You discover the farming, irrigation and cattle husbandry techniques, visit houses and, if you want, sample local cuisine of the Iraqw tribe. There is also traditional wood-fired brick making, local musicians and you generally gain a deeper understanding of the lifestyle of the people who live here. Afterwards, return to Arusha for onward travel.
